Life is not a long quiet river. It is made of ups and downs, mostly downs than ups elsewhere, with moments of sorrow and sadness, worries or injury, periods of doubt and questioning. We often feel the need to blow, breathe, forget or take a break, physically but also inwardly in our head, in a daily newspaper that difficult, tormented and sometimes so unbearable.
But now, the need to rest, to forget or to relax can cause conflict among Muslims who ask constantly whether the entertainment is consistent with the values of Islam.
Can Muslims indulge without feeling guilty? Do they have the right to laugh or even smile, entertain or be entertained without feeling bad or negligent in relation to the All Forgiving?
Can they take time to breathe, express their joy of life or simply live their lives without being told: this is not “Islamic”, it does not conform to the “Sunnah”, that is a “bid’ah” or worse, it is “haram” ?
Do they have the right to seek the beauty and aesthetic satisfaction, listen to music or go to the movies without being called to order by the thought police?
This is just a small sample of the many issues that concern Muslims today and hold discussions every day. We assist helpless, choked by sadness and guilt at this sad spectacle or Islam is truncated and reduced to the application of a timeless and inhumane penal code, as seen in some countries called “Muslim.”
In reality, these endless debates, sad and sterile show intellectual laziness, superficiality in thinking and lack of discernment that cruelly rife in Muslim societies. Many Muslims continue to quarrel suddenly verses of the Koran, “Hadith” or about this or that Muslim scholar considered safer, more honest and more competent than another.
One day, one of the scribes (secretaries) of the Prophet (PBUH), the companion Handhala al-Ussaydi, wanting unravel the son contradictory feelings that assailed him, met Abu Bakr who said, “How are you feeling this morning Handhala ? “.
“I feel hypocritical,” he said.
“Glory to God, do you realize you of what you say?” Abu Bakr said, surprised and disturbed by about Handhala who entrusted him: “When we are in the presence of the Prophet (pbuh), we are not far to see heaven and hell when we talk But. with increasing distance from the messenger of God, we are so distracted by our wives, our children and our business that we forget his words. ”
Living these tensions, Abu Bakr entrusted him: “By God, I feel exactly the same as you.” They went together to the Prophet (PBUH) to ask him about these seemingly contradictory feelings and take stock of the state of their hearts. Handhala exposes his feelings and concerns to the Prophet (pbuh) and expresses the nature of its doubts and the Prophet (PBUH) replied: “By Him Who holds my soul in His Hands, if you had the power to remain in the spiritual state you are when you are with me and the permanent remembrance of God, the angels would greet you and serreraient hands in your beds and paths. ” “But it is not so, Handhala, it’s an hour for it and an hour for it ” (he repeated three times) (Reported by Muslim).
Islam is not opposed to the well-being and happiness. The prophet (PBUH) showed us the way, and pointed the way. He practiced humor, joking knew, listened poetry and loved beautiful because “God is beautiful and He loves beauty” (Reported by Muslim). Being with God, not to be serious all the time, always pray or read the Koran, never relax and have constant eyes on the afterlife, its rewards and punishments. “There is a time for the things of this world and a time for the hereafter” said the Prophet (PBUH).
Smile to life, play sports, listen to music, watch a good movie or a play is not no harm in itself. In the area of ”Al-mu’amalat”, that is to say, social affairs, “everything is permitted except that which is explicitly prohibited by the text ” says the well-known legal rule. While there excesses that are scary. Seek pleasure for pleasure, at the risk of dehumanizing, is obviously contrary to the values of Islam.
Pray with love, read the Quran with meditation and remember God while fully enjoying life without getting lost and not forgetting the all forgiving the risk of being forgotten, these are the conditions of emotional, physical and spiritual many Muslim and Muslims are struggling to build and respect.
